The book is a worth-while read for researchers, stakeholders and activists, who should reflect on ways that other districts may share some of these dynamics of inequality.

Through his nuanced analysis of one community and its schools he shows us why even in these affluent enclaves race and class disparities in academic outcomes persist, and resentments over frustrated hopes and dreams fester. For those who seek to understand why suburbia has not fulfilled the promises that so many have hoped would be possible, Inequality in the Promised Land will be an invaluable resource. Lewis-McCoy's rich ethnographic data highlights an entirely new style of 'concerted-cultivation' as he shows that white parents are uniquely able to 'cultivate' school administrators who are desperate to preserve the racial balance read: majority white status of their schools, while black parents are deflected as the 'fortunate beneficiaries' of public largesse.

An original, powerful, and troubling indictment of suburban school patterns that are too often downplayed and rarely, if ever, confronted directly. Royster, New York University. We just spent 4 days in this idyllic location which came highly recommended by 2 separate friends. We had no real plans but to relax and Promised Land delivered. Hours were spent in the pool where we often lucked out and had it to ourselves or played with some of the other children. We took several walks on the beach at sundown when the water receded and also went on the dolphin tour.

Kizimkazi has the best sunset views that in my opinion trump Santorinis, and unlike in Santorini you are not fighting to catch them with tones of other people. Meals were great and offered some variety, it would be nice if they had more local options though.

Bedrooms are open in that they have mosquito netting for windows, but this was part of the experience. The staff make this place worth returning to, Asante Sana Sheby for providing us with a place to lay back and relax for a few days. We even managed to walk away with new friends. We got more than what we paid for.

Date of stay: August Trip type: Traveled with family. Jenni-Sisko wrote a review Jul Perfect place to unwind. The Promised Land was first stopping place on our trip trough Tanzania and it was perfect! The staff was really friendly, food was simple but good, area was beautiful, lodges were cozy and the atmosphere was home-like. It is true that it is little hard to move around Kizimkazi but if you like to stay in one spot for a while, this is the place.

There were no white beaches but you can go to swim during the high tide. Pool was clean and big so you can go there when ever. I just loved the hammocks, sofas, chairs and swings which you can find everywhere! Also the garden was beautiful!

Like others who responded we didn't find it a problem leaving valuables in the room. Valuables we carried were some TZ shillings and our passports which we 'hid' in the room.

Cameras were just left in luggage. There was never a problem and the cleaning staff came for our key when they needed to clean and returned it right after they were finished. Leave everything else at home. Peter S asked a question Mar Answer from Fiuric. LPDeamer asked a question Oct New York City, New York. Answer from thewanderingsoles.
